There are many diseases associated to a sedentary lifestyle… diabetes, weight problems, heart disease, anxiety, depression and others… the most inactive people age more biologically than active persons. Cells age faster with the sedentary lifestyle. Today, only around 25% of the jobs are not sedentary. Around 60 to 85% of the population today does not have enough physical activity. In countries of higher income up to 45% are sedentary. According to WHO, around 6% of all deaths are caused by sedentarism. It is already the fourth world risk of mortality, following behind high blood pressure, heart disease and others.

What does this mean? That at least you should walk 10,000 steps a day to maintain and improve your health. Just with this, our immunological systems and defense systems in our bodies are raised over 30%.

Dr. James Levine investigated that for every hour of inactivity, the expectancy of life is reduced two hours. On the other side, studies indicate that for every cigarette smoked one reduces 11 minutes of life expectancy. That is why “being seated” many hours has become the “new” cigarette. Over 60% of the population today spends over 3 hours sitting. Sitting for hours harms the spine, leads to poorer breathing, which leads to lack of concentration and focus for the brain. Children are harmed by lack of physical activity and affects their learning quality. Studies indicate that longer hours of television and videogames raise the levels of stress, anxiety and depression in children.

What can be done?

Walk at least 20 minutes a day.

If you work at a desk, make sure you stretch and walk around every hour.

Rest well, don’t smoke, have a sports activity, do gardening, walk your dog, ride a bike, turn of the television, and reactivate your life. Take time to play with your children, enjoy your family, and eat less.

Choose a life of growth and forgiveness that will also add to the quality of your life for your mental and spiritual health also.
