Punching holes in the darkness

There is a story that when the Scottish writer Robert Lewis Stevenson (author of Treasure Island) was a child, he was looking through a window at sundown around the year 1860. From his window he saw a lamplighter walking down the dark streets lighting the lamps on his way. He exclaimed, “Look at that man! He’s punching holes in the darkness!”
Each of us can be “punching holes in darkness”. We can be kind, respectful, generous, good parents, good children, good neighbors and friends. We can be a difference from our small place in the world. We can shine into the darkness. Let’s make the darkness less dark. Let’s make a difference.
